Spider Roll Showdown!

Yes, that’s right. The ultimate spider roll showdown between two different sushi places. One being more traditional like, the other being more modern like, it really depends on your preference.

On wikipedia: “The spider roll includes fried soft shell crab and other fillings such as cucumber, avocado, daikon sprouts or lettuce, roe, and spicy mayonnaise.

Spider Roll @ Oishii, Sunnybank Hills

The first one shown here, is the eqxuisite spider roll you can eat at Oiishii on Pinelands Road, Sunnybank Hills. It tastes pretty good and highly recommend it for fans of “crunchy sushi”. It is what I’d call contemporary sushi, where they modify the traditional sushi formula with a new way of doing it, and is a fusion of the best of all worlds. This one here contains crab, topiko (flying fish roe), cucumber, a special fishcake mixture, along with the usual nori (seaweed) and rice. It is a nice change from the traditional sushi, and is pretty good for tastebuds. This plate here was $10 when I had it last.

Spider Roll @ Sushi on the Run, Chinatown, Brisbane

This second pic is one taken from a sushi restaurant in the valley, called Sushi on the Run. Essentially this is your usual sushi train type of restaurant where you pay for each dish you eat, and you pick it out from the back of a moving train. You can think of it as a buffet, but you pay for the dishes you pick out from a train. This one has more crab content per sushi, but the sushi itself is a lot smaller. This dish was about 5 bucks I think. It still tastes great, and I wouldn’t mind having this once in a while too. It just has the crab, black and white seasme seeds, and some sprouts too.

All in all, it really depends what kinda style you prefer – a modern or a traditional setting. I personally prefer the traditional one, as a smaller serve of one sushi = more variety for another! =D

Until next time~

  2. i prefer the one from oishii :P i reckon places like sushi train, where you pick sushis off a conveyor belt are usually quite stingy/rip off.. they either make it sort of cheap and not put enough ingredients in it, or they overprice it.. i guess it looks OKAY, but i think the oishii one looks more appetising to me :)
