Hey guys.
It’s been a while =P Hope you guys didn’t miss me too badly. For me not posting for over a month, I bring you something that I reckon many of you haven’t tried before, for those not keen on raw stuff (sashimi for all you guys knowing your japanese tabemono!), you should skip this entry.

Haha, I bet most of you were thinking I’d be blogging about your typical salmon, tuna sashimi. What I have here is pretty much the best of the best pieces of sushi you could eat. Back at home in Australia, it would be hard to try out these, especially the 2 dishes on the left. You pretty much have to taste it to believe how good these sashimi are. I’ll give you guys a brief summary of each of these 3 unique dishes. =P
Let’s start from the top - the yellow stuff is known in Japanese as Uni. In English, it is known as Sea Urchin Roe; in other words, the eggs from a sea urchin. What makes this so unique, is the aftertaste you get after trying a bit of it. It’s full of flavour, and is similar to crab eggs in hairy crabs. (look it up in google if you’ve tried these small crabs from China and HK). If it’s available in Aus, it usually will be pretty expensive compared to other sashimi.
Next is the Rolls Royce or should I say, the King of sashimi - the Toro. It is known as the tuna belly; the best fish cut in sashimi you could ever eat. When you take a bite of it, the fish piece literally melts in your mouth. It’s my idea of food heaven. =P But heaven comes at that heavenly price too. Toro is more common than Uni, and should be available at the more “higher class” sushi/sashimi restaurants. If you want more info on the most prestigious sashimi, google “toro sashimi”.
Last but not least, is the combination of calamari, and a fresh sashimi (im not sure what it is, but it was fresh and tasted as good as salmon =P) If you don’t like slippery seafoods like oysters, I doubt this calamari would tempt you. It is still tasty, and also has that “sweet” taste that comes with some raw seafoods. It’s still worth a try!
Now you might want to know where something like this could be served - in none other than in Japan! This was served in one of those “hot spring hotel feasts” where food is brought to your table, while you take in the whole Japanese atmosphere (at Shirahama, about 90 mins from Osaka). It doesn’t come cheap, but it is a worthwhile experience in terms of culture, and food appreciation =P
Until next time, I hope to find some more spare time to blog more about the great foods that this world has to offer - bear with me if I don’t blog as often as I’d like. Hope you guys have a fun easter too! Maybe I’ll blog on easter eggs next time… xD
